EARTH DAY NETWORK RECEIVES $235,000 GRANT FROM THE UPS FOUNDATION
WASHINGTON, DC – October 18, 2011 — Earth Day Network received a $235,000 grant from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS (NYSE:UPS). The grant will be used to expand Earth Day Network’s transportation-based environmental education projects and to plant trees in five US cities and Belgium. With the assistance of The UPS Foundation, Earth Day Network will expand our transportation work in schools, which provides biodiesel education and production facilities as hands-on learning experiences to help solve community environmental challenges. In completing these projects, Earth Day Network will empower teachers and students to address and help to solve specific environmental concerns in local communities. Additionally, funding will support Earth Day Network’s Canopy Project. “We are thrilled to once again have the support of The UPS Foundation for our successful Education program and also as a new partner on our Canopy project,” said Kathleen Rogers, president of Earth Day Network. “This funding allows us to further pursue our mission of increasing public education and action to address the environmental needs of local and global communities,” added Rogers. Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Ga., The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified the following focus areas for giving: non-profit effectiveness, economic & global literacy, encouraging diversity, community safety and environmental sustainability. In 2010, The UPS Foundation distributed $44.6 million worldwide through grants that benefit organizations or programs such as Earth Day Network’s Education program, providing support for building stronger communities. “The UPS Foundation is committed to funding impactful programs that make a meaningful difference in our communities – so we are proud to support Earth Day Network’s efforts to drive awareness and education of environmental issues,” said Ken Sternad, president of The UPS Foundation.
