Earth Day Network Star Municipal Leadership Award for Srinagar Municipal Corporation
April 5, 2022
Srinagar Municipal Corporation is a recipient of the Earth Day Network Star Municipal Leadership Award for their 6R anti-polythene drive and the enforcement of a blanket ban on single-use plastic.
To mark Earth Day’s 50th anniversary in 2020, Earth Day Network India launched ‘Earth Day Network Star Municipal Leadership Awards’ to commend municipal bodies in India whose policies and actions have positively impacted the environment.
The award was received by the Municipal Commissioner of Srinagar Municipal Corporation Mr Athar Aamir Khan. Mrs Karuna Singh, Regional Director Asia, EARTHDAY.ORG, presented the award to the Municipal Commissioner.
On the occasion, Mr Athar Aamir Khan said: “The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is working closely with local communities and citizens to eradicate plastic and to make Srinagar into one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country. The support and participation of the public has been overwhelming”.
Mrs Karuna Singh said: “April 22 is Earth Day and the theme for this year’s Earth Day is ‘Invest In Our Planet. This partnership for the planet calls upon all businesses, governments, and citizens –everyone who lives on Earth – to help accelerate solutions to combat climate change. Srinagar Municipal Corporation’s effort is a brilliant way to invest in our planet.”
Earth Day Network-India (EDN) is an environmental organisation. We aim to help Restore our Earth with initiatives that focus on ways to regrow green cover, rejuvenate aquifers, restore soil, refresh air, reduce and manage waste, encourage a switch to clean and green energies, and build environmental stewardship among youth. We are inspired by the global NGO EARTHDAY.ORG™ that grew out of the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, and today engages with over 50,000 organisations in some 190 countries to take the environmental movement forward.
