Climate Action
Griegos Elementary School introduces biodiversity campaign
June 16, 2019
The Challenge
The world is facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago. But unlike the fate of the dinosaurs, the rapid extinction of species in our world today is the result of human activity.
The Project
Today, many plant and animal species are in danger because of human actions. Some species are already extinct, and many more are endangered or vulnerable due to habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and more. Earth Day Network has spearheaded the Protect Our Species campaign to champion biodiversity and protect endangered animals and plants during 2019, and we are thrilled to see teachers and students around the world working to help us Protect Our Species!
Fifth grade students at Griegos Elementary School in Albuquerque, New Mexico learned about endangered species in February and made a campaign to introduce their community to the important issue of biodiversity loss. Students researched different kinds of endangered species and created posters about them to spread the word to other students and parents on their campus.
These posters were hung throughout the school to promote their “spare change drive” to encourage their peers to raise money for Earth Day Network’s Protect Our Species campaign.
Through this creative effort, these amazing students raised over $540 to help Earth Day Network Protect Our Species!“Anytime we get an opportunity to show our students they can make a difference in their communities, but also in the world, we support them,” 5th grade teacher Karen Rademacher said. “We are so proud of our students.”
Earth Day Network would like to thank all the 5th grade students and teachers of Griegos Elementary School!
