Media Specialist
Location: Washington, DC, in office 1 day a week

Position Overview
EARTHDAY.ORG seeks a Media Specialist to research, conceptualize, and craft original story ideas to take to journalists. The role will also cultivate relationships with a range of print and digital outlets. Working closely with the Program staff, you will contribute to the creation and execution of our media reach.
Responsibilities
- On-going cultivation of press relationships (print, broadcast, traditional & environmental-specific) for EDO as a whole and around particular EDO programs/campaigns
- Winning press coverage for EARTHDAY.ORG that brings our work and mission to as wide an audience as possible
- Execute tactical communication plans to drive media coverage for our campaigns.
- Writing and editing stand out press releases, media alerts and other outreach (email, newsletters, reports).
- Research and write articles for publication, both on EDO platforms and external media outlets.
- Editing other writer’s work, quickly and efficiently.
- Setting up and assisting with press interviews.
- Providing support for EDO’s social media and marketing efforts as needed.
- Maintain national and global media contact database and distribution lists.
- Track results, metrics and media coverage to measure the effectiveness of communications using our media database systems.
- Feels comfortable making phone calls to the press and talking to other journalists.
- Help innovate short- and long-term strategies to drive coverage of our campaigns and effectively deliver the core EDO message.
- Work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
- Additional activities in support of the environment.
Qualifications
- Work Experience: 3-5 years of work experience
- Education: Bachelor’s in English, Communications, or Writing preferred, or equivalent experience
- Capabilities: Ability to work well with a wide range of people, work well under pressure, and adapt to changing situations. Detail-oriented, creative, and collaborative. An understanding or background in the environmental and/or climate space is a plus
Physical Demands
This is a sedentary position, in which you may occasionally need to lift and carry books or files up to 10 pounds. Occasional travel may be required.
