Much of the support for the first Earth Day came from college campuses, and this year, there was a strong effort to recapture that spirit for the 40th Anniversary. In the months leading up to Earth Day 2010, the goals of Earth Day Network’s campus program have included promoting campus events on the website, creating a outreach-platform and how-to guidebook for student led Earth Day rallies, as well working to mobilize students from as far away as Milwaukee, Georgia, Florida and Vermont to attend The Climate Rally on the National Mall in Washington DC.
2010 was a great year for Earth Day on college campuses across the world, however, we cannot afford to stop and congratulate ourselves. Until we have strong climate legislation in place that aggressively decreases our impact on climate change, we need to keep fighting to make our elected leaders act on behalf of our future. 2011 will come quickly, and Earth Day Network is looking forward to working with even more campuses in the coming year to make sure our voice is heard.
Earth Day events can take many forms, and there are many ways to deliver a strong message to both attendees and school administrations. Depending on what is already being organized, the participation of the various student groups could include hosting a forum segment, speaking at a rally, or tabling an event. Regardless of the type of activity, the goal is to show how sustainability and a green future intersect with the concerns of each group and affects every individual.
As we look forward to the upcoming Earth Day, schools can still tell us about their 2010 events online at the events page, and we’re also encouraging students to update previously registered events with success stories. Thousands of schools across the country participated in Earth Day and our events page helps corral this collective effort to show the power that we all can make with our individual actions. If you have already begun planning your 2011 events, feel free to add them now and update as April 22nd approaches!.
Students can also download our revamped on-campus organizers that teaches student leaders to replicate the partnerships model of Earth Day Network, and scale it down to create on-campus alliances with non-environmental student groups. This model is scalable depending on the size of your school, and once the relationships are built with the other groups, easily replicable from year to year. For students have already have Earth Day events planned, it also serves as a guide for on-campus outreach to make your Earth Day events even more impactful.
In addition, as anyone at the Earth Day 2010 Climate Rally on the National Mall in Washington DC could tell you, the youth were a loud and visible part of audience. College students turned out in droves to support a strong climate bill and stand up for a clean energy future. Student leaders joined together to talk about their plans for coming year, and left with a new sense of resolve. The goal of the rally was to reenergize the movement as we face the next stage in our fight for climate legislation. We cannot let that energy wane as we move forward. Act now, act often, and let’s keep working to protect our future.
