Some Earth Day Inspiration from Around the Globe
Here at Earth Day Network, organizers are continuing to build international partnerships as we work to Mobilize the Earth™ on April 22nd. Check out the weekly international highlights:
In the islands of Turks and Caicos, the Department of Environmental and Coastal Resources (DECR) is mobilizing by sponsoring a week of educational activities in honor of Earth Day. Starting April 16th, the DECR will visit dozens of schools on the island where they will host multiple tree plantings, take students on a bird-watching excursion, and offer a screening of “The Lorax.” The week of festivities will culminate on Earth Day with an island-wide cleanup, co-sponsored by the Turks & Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association.
In Zimbabwe, under the slogan “Do Good for Yourself, Do Good for Your Planet,” Earth Day Network partner iGreen Africais mobilizing by hosting various environmental activities in honor of Earth Day 2012. iGreen Africa has already been inspiring commitment for A Billion Act of Green®by establishing events throughout the country. These events include faith-based awareness seminars, clean-up campaigns in the capital city of Harare, and even an Earth Day-themed concert called“Green Alive,” happening on April 22nd.
In Malta, the student group Youth for the Environment(Y4TE), in collaboration with the University of Malta Geographical Society, is mobilizing for Earth Day by cleaning up part of Il-Majjistral Park – and then giving participants in the clean-up a chance to admire the beautiful scenery during a picnic. Y4TE was set up at the University of Malta in May 2010 and promotes respect and care for the environment and people of Malta on a local and international scale.
In India, the Calcutta Foundation in coordination with Earth Day Network will host an event with 600 children to celebrate the annual spring festival Holi or the “Festival of Colors.” Holi brings together people of all backgrounds and is celebrated by throwing scented powder and water into the air. This year, His Excellency Shri M.K Narayanan, Governor of West Bengal, will host 600 children at his home to discuss the importance of organic food production and water conservation in relation to Holi and Earth Day.
