Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Announced as Key Partner for Earth Day 50th Anniversary
October 24, 2019
Washington DC/New York—Earth Day Network, which coordinates the annual Earth Day, is today delighted to announce that Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) become a key partner for 2020.
NRDC, a not-for-profit organization that works to safeguard the Earth – its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends, joins thousands of other groups and entities world-wide dedicated to make stepped-up environmental action a corner stone in this crucial year.
Kathleen Rogers, President of the Earth Day Network, said: “I am delighted to welcome NRDC into the Earth Day family and am sure that together we can make 2020 a year that can help change the course of history.”
“From climate change and the loss of species to rising waste in our rivers, seas and oceans the world and its people are facing major challenges that threaten lives, livelihoods and the very health of our planet. 2020 needs to be the year when humanity truly starts to turn this around and we are determined to play our part,” she added.
Mitch Bernard, Chief Counsel / Interim President of NRDC remarked: “The environmental movement has made incredible strides in 50 years, but our greatest challenge – the climate crisis – is more urgent than ever. This is a moment to demand climate action, especially for the communities on the frontlines of this fight.”
Earth Day 2020 comes 50 years after the first Earth Day which, in 1970, mobilized over 20 million citizens to demand action on the environmental challenges of the time.
Today Earth Day is observed in around 190 countries and mobilizes one billion people and close to 100,000 organizations.
The overarching theme for Earth Day 2020, 22 April, is action on climate change.
