In celebration of Rachel Carson’s birthday
May 20, 2014
(New York, NY—May 20, 2014)—Open Road Integrated Media and Earth Day Network are pleased to announce a partnership in celebration of Rachel Carson’s birthday, to honor her legacy of environmental conservation, and to mark fifty years since her death in 1964. For every Open Road Media Rachel Carson ebook sold between May 20 and May 27, Open Road will donate one dollar to the Earth Day Network. Qualifying purchases can be made at Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, the Kobo ebookstore, Google Play Books, and the Apple iBookstore.
Open Road Media’s Rachel Carson ebooks include The Sense of Wonder, The Sea Around Us, and her first book, Under the Sea Wind. Her works are often cited as being foundational for the environmental movement. “Rachel Carson’s books showed us that human beings are just one part of nature,” said Earth Day Network president Kathleen Rogers, “and that our power to alter it, in some cases irreversibly, comes with a huge responsibility. Her depictions of the beauty and integrity of life continue to inspire new generations and are worth returning to read again and again.”
The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, activated twenty million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement, building on the stage set by Carson’s work. Growing out of the first Earth Day, Earth Day Network (EDN) works with over twenty-two thousand partners in one hundred ninety-two countries to broaden, diversify, and mobilize the movement.
Rachel Carson wrote, “One way to open your eyes . . . is to ask yourself, ‘What if I had never seen this before? What if I knew I would never see it again?’ ” Her books urge us to take action, and we can do this by supporting essential organizations like the Earth Day Network.
