At this point Virginia has no framework in place to teach climate change in K-12 schools and any attempt to implement legislation to change this has been shut down. If Virginia hopes to make any forward progress, they will have to start passing legislation which mandates the teaching of climate change in classrooms.
Virginia House Bill 362 which would have required the department of education to develop a “program of instruction on the causes of and potential solutions for climate change” died in committee in February, 2022
Virginia House Bill 1088 would require the state board of education to aid local school boards with instructional materials on climate change and environmental literacy. (Prefiled in January, 2024)
