BACKGROUND: The San Antonio effort specifically targets greenway spaces – which are stretches of open land, often following features like roads and rivers, that are set aside for recreational use, environmental conservation, or biking and walking. Many of the greenway spaces in San Antonio are reclaimed areas of land that have undergone recent transformation—from areas previously impacted by drug activity and chronic pollution to community-focused, vibrant gathering spots for residents.

Despite these improvements, significant trash and waste remains in these areas, threatening both wildlife and public use. The cleanup is an opportunity for local residents to reclaim these patches of land, areas and strengthen the connection between the community and the environment.

“The Great Global Cleanup aims to tackle plastic pollution and drive long-term change. River Aid San Antonio embodies that mission through their work, and we’re proud to partner with them this year,” said Michael Karapetian, The Great Global Cleanup Coordinator at EARTHDAY.ORG.

“San Antonio’s waterways and the connected Greenway Trails are, for many, the only accessible connection to nature. That’s why it’s absolutely essential we steward these spaces — not just to protect them, but to ensure every community sees their value and can continue to enjoy them for generations to come.” said Charles Blank, Founder of River Aid San Antonio.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg has been invited to attend the cleanup and share remarks, alongside community volunteers who will be available to discuss the personal and civic importance of maintaining these spaces.
