Obama’s Climate Plan Hits and Misses Statement of Kathleen Rogers, President, Earth Day Network
President Obama’s Climate Action Plan isn’t perfect: Nuclear power isn’t part of a responsible solution, and clean coal is a myth. Moreover, the plan’s emissions targets aren’t new, and they aren’t aggressive enough. Nevertheless, on the whole, the plan is a monumental step forward that deserves the support of the nation and the world. The most significant step the president took is to mandate that the federal government finally follow through on its obligation to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from new and existing power plants, which account for around 40% of total U.S. emissions. We are also heartened by his call for an end to U.S. government support for public financing of new coal plants overseas. Implementing these and many other important steps laid out in the plan will not be easy; dirty-energy companies will fight them every step of the way. So, Earth Day Network is calling on our partners and supporters to stand with the president and support the important steps that the administration will take in the coming months to combat climate change.###
