Climate Education

Making Climate Education a Cornerstone of Global Climate Action at COP30

Climate education is gaining momentum as a crucial element of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in the lead-up to COP30 in Belém, Brazil. EARTHDAY.ORG and REDEM are joining forces to elevate its importance within the NDC framework. As COP30 approaches, climate education must remain central to climate negotiations. The NDC 3.0 process presents a key opportunity for governments to recognize climate education’s vital role in raising awareness, changing behaviors, and empowering youth and communities. By incorporating climate literacy, policy engagement, and youth empowerment, alongside a focus on green jobs and entrepreneurship, into national climate strategies, governments can build a more informed and proactive global community, equipped to achieve the Paris Agreement goals.

To amplify this message, REDEM is joining forces with EARTHDAY.ORG to position education as a core climate solution. REDEM (Global Education Network) has been a significant force in promoting climate education across Latin America and the Caribbean for more than 20 years. Through partnerships with Ministries of Environment and Education, the network has spearheaded educational campaigns, teacher training, and policy recommendations. REDEM prioritizes climate education in NDCs, as highlighted on their website: https://www.redem.org/la-importancia-de-la-inclusion-de-educacion-climatica-en-las-ndcs/. Their extensive network, including collaborations with the Environmental Training Network for Latin America and the Caribbean, amplifies their impact.

Given that Spanish is the second most spoken native language globally, integrating climate education in Spanish-speaking countries is crucial. With hundreds of millions of Spanish speakers relying on Spanish-language media, ensuring their access to accurate and actionable environmental education is essential.

These educational efforts are vital for climate awareness and for cultivating the green skills and entrepreneurial spirit needed to build a thriving green economy.
