Vice President of Development

Reporting to the President, the Vice President (VP) of Development serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Earth Day Network. In partnership with the President, this position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build Earth Day Network’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. The VP, Development also will design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.

The VP, Development will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $5 million budget annually, ramping up to a $50 million budget for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in 2020 through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. She or he will expand and diversify Earth Day Network’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the VP will work closely with the board of directors and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role.

It is expected that the amount raised by Earth Day Network will increase in future years as the VP of Development systematically and effectively strengthens the organization’s overall fundraising capacity.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and partner with the President on all major fundraising initiatives
  • Collaborate with senior management to develop and implement Earth Day Network’s  financial strategy
  • Actively work with the President and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include corporate, foundation, government grants, etc.
  • Have primary responsibility for development and execution of all proposals; write and archive all proposals with a long-term relationship-management approach
  • Oversee research funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position Earth Day Network ahead of major funding changes or trends
  • Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leadership
  • Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors
  • Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program
  • Identify, develop, and mentor the development team

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred
  • 10-plus years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources, preferably in the environmental sector)
  • Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives
  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside Earth Day Network

Director of Development

Responsibilities:

  • Have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $3-5 million annual budget and special events including 50th Anniversary commemoration through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support.

Job Description

The position reports to the Senior Vice President, Programs and Operations

  • Conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources;
  • Performing prospect research on foundations and corporations to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants;
  • Working with program staff to gather information necessary for proposals and reports;
  • Work with finance to gather information necessary to report to corporate/foundation funders on current grant programs;
  • Comply with all grants reporting including preparing interim and final reports as required by individual/foundation/corporate and other donors;
  • Provide stewardship to donors, including drafting donor acknowledgements, regular written updates and other correspondence to individual, corporate, foundation and other donors;
  • Understand institutional history and programs;
  • Make appointments for senior management with foundation officers and other donor prospects;
  • Maintain grant tracking and reporting information in the organization’s database and paper files;
  • Track statistics relevant to development;
  • Coordinate preparation and planning for donor presentations including information packets.
  • Responsible for the daily operations of the development office.
  • Conduct research for meetings, proposal submissions and other efforts.
  • Oversee the development calendar including meetings, as well as reporting and proposal deadlines.
  • Write/edit/compile initial drafts of grant proposals and other donor materials and supportive documents and assemble materials for submission.
  • Coordinate with communications department in fundraising using social media and crowdsourcing
  • Conduct follow-up to obtain pledged donations.
  • Prepare and update descriptive information about the organization for the use in written and electronic materials.
  • Maintain and manage internal donor files, including tracking donors and prospects, mail merge, labels and list production using paper and electronic filing systems, spreadsheets, and databases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two years experience in a development/fundraising environment
  • Superior tact, discretion, maturity and judgment in handling highly sensitive information, and personal conduct
  • Knowledge of spreadsheets and database programs; Salsa experience is a plus
  • Knowledge and experience in fundraising using social media and crowdsourcing
  • Must be well organized, highly accurate and detailed oriented

National Field Director

Earth Day Network is seeking a U.S. National Field Director who can help us build a broad, coordinated active 21st century environmental movement using the 50th anniversary in 2020 as the vehicle.

We are seeking an experienced self-starter, a highly motivated person who cares deeply about environmental issues and who has experience in movement building.  We are seeking a person who cares about broadening the environmental movement and who can build diverse and deep partnerships with organizations across all segments of society.  The Director will lead the national effort to build broad civic engagement starting now through November 2020.   Working with senior management and a team of staff and volunteers, the Director will play a key role in developing the overall strategy for this campaign and will lead the effort to build momentum as we move toward the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and turn out millions of people in cities and towns across the United States.

This job requires the application to:

  • Help carry out EDN’s mission to build environmental democracy and to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement
  • Develop the overall strategy for US field operations for Earth Day 2019-2020

2019 Spring Internship

EDN is looking for qualified candidates with a strong interest and knowledge in current environmental issues and to play a vital role in the planning and implementation of Earth Day 2019, Earth Day 2020 (Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary!!), and all year-round programming. Interns will work closely with EDN’s staff to gain experience by attending meetings, writing blogs, performing research, and assisting in grassroots outreach. EDN’s Internship Program goal is for the intern to have an intense and high-quality learning experience in a nonprofit environment which will increase their knowledge and experience in the environmental field, bolster their professional resume, and benefit from being a dedicated member of the EDN team.

Specific Responsibilities May Include:

  • Supporting Earth Day Network in our efforts to connect our global network of grassroots organizations, local authorities, educators, and youth.

EDN seeks a full-time Communication Director to serve as an integral member of the management team. EDN manages Earth Day initiatives worldwide as well as works year-round on environmental policy and other campaigns and programs. EDN is preparing for Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary in 2020. The Communication Director will be responsible for the development and execution of EDN’s communication strategy for our year-round programs, Earth Day 2019, and for our 50th anniversary, which will be held in 192 countries. The Director is responsible for media advocacy, media partnerships, digital advocacy, thought leadership, organizational/issue visibility, and communication strategies.

The Communication Director will set communication goals and priorities for the organization and evaluate outcomes and results to inform future work. The Director will also be responsible for more than executing campaigns. The Communication Director will serve as the point-person for developing and implementing communication initiatives and activities that promote awareness of and participation in Earth Day events as well as awareness of and partnership with Earth Day Network. These initiatives and activities include campaigns (e.g., print, web, social media, broadcast, etc.), events, corporate responsibility programs, and sponsorships.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute integrated strategic communication plans to advance EDN’s mission, broaden awareness of EDN’s work, and increase the visibility of the organization worldwide.
  • Work with press around the world to ensure that EDN’s brand, message, and substantive goals are communicated.
  • Produce EDN’s campaign and program materials ensuring brand consistency and messaging.
  • Identify appropriate channels for stories and pitches and maintain meaningful relationships with journalists, producers, bookers, bloggers, and social media outlets.

  • Build and maintain a global media contact database.

Education Coordinator at Earth Day Network

Reports to:  Director of Education

Earth Day Network is seeking an Education Coordinator who can help us expand the global reach of our strong education programs to increase environmental and climate literacy worldwide and who can focus on our 2020 campaign to mobilize 500 million students worldwide for our 50th anniversary.

We are seeking an organized professional, a highly motivated person who cares deeply about environmental issues, and an educator who has experience in both formal and non-formal environmental education programs.

Working closely with the Director of Education, the Education Coordinator will support all aspects of the Education Department including:

  • Supporting the growth in number and diversity of EDN’s education partners
  • Coordinating the organization of all global education partners for Earth Day 2019 and 2020
  • Conducting research and assisting in creation and continuance of curricula, web resources, and other supporting materials for Earth Day 2019, 2020, and all additional education programs (including, but not limited to: NCEP, Green Schools, School Lunch Week, MobilizeU, Climate and Environmental Literacy, etc.)
  • Communicating with the global Educators Network through email newsletters
  • Creating content for blogs and social media highlighting EDN education programs and initiatives
  • Writing grant applications and funding proposals to financially support education department programs and goals
  • Maintaining operations and ongoing communication with Educators’ Network members and partners, such as management of Go Organic! for Earth Day campaign, Walden project, and other partnerships with national and local organizations
  • Monitoring and analyzing federal, state and local initiatives in identified policy areas including support for actions, as well as developing and implementing strategies with Education Director to further EDN’s policy priorities
  • Coordinating day-to-day logistics of the Education Department, including meetings and conferences
  • Recruiting, hiring, and managing Education Interns (undergraduate and graduate students)
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Four-year college degree required, masters preferred.

Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of environmental education program development and evaluation, knowledge of formal education standards in the US and international education programs, background knowledge in global environmental issues, experience leading formal and/or non-formal education programs, and knowledge of environmental NGO operations

Work Experience: At least three years of formal or non-formal education experience required; grant writing experience preferred

Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills; exceptional organizational skills and ability to multitask

Capabilities: Ability to work well with a wide range of audiences, be a team player, but also function well working independently, be proactive and anticipate departmental and organizational needs, multilingual capabilities are strongly preferred

The Program Assistant is responsible for the support required to develop global partnerships for the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2020, including, building contact lists, digital file management, internal and external communications, support of the project management leadership, and meeting support. The function of this position is to provide administrative support and external outreach to all team members working on building partnerships for 2020. This is a 30 hour per week position, as a grant-funded position is expected to end of 2020, based in Washington, D.C.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • General program support
  • Meeting preparation: responsible for scheduling, note-taking, preparing documents, logistics, and communications
  • Managing, creating and updating contact lists
  • Sending email communications and tracking responses and preparing next steps
  • Managing program general email accounts
  • File Management and document archive system
  • Ongoing management of cloud-based file sharing system and real-time document updates
  • Manage updates on Salsa CRM system and run reports

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 2-year degree and one year of experience in an area related to office administrative or program support is a plus.
  • Prior work experience in a non-profit organization a plus.
  • Excellent skills in the areas of organization, attention to detail, time management, ability to manage multiple tasks, define and set priorities and problem solving are required
  • Very strong ability to think ahead, take personal initiative, work both independently and as a team member, collaborate and coordinate with others
  • Excellent writing and grammar skills and general communications abilities, written and verbal are required.
  • Exhibits flexibility and can-do attitude
  • Excellent skills and experience with Excel, and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

VOLUNTEER CITY LIAISONS FOR EARTH DAY 2020

Earth Day Network (EDN) is seeking volunteer City Liaisons to identify the key local actors from all sectors in their city which can plan and execute Earth Day 2020 in every city of the world.

The 50th anniversary of Earth Day in 2020 comes at a pivotal time in history when the people and the planet must confront complex environmental challenges. It presents a unique opportunity to unite people across social and political boundaries, as occurred on the first Earth Day in 1970, creating a catalytic moment to launch the world into a new era of environmental awareness and action.

In 1970, groups fighting against problems as diverse as air and water pollution or the loss of biodiversity and habitat realized they shared common values. The first Earth Day convinced the public that a healthy environment is vital to our well-being. It led to the immediate creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the rapid passage of landmark environmental legislation. It also inspired others around the world, and a global environmental movement was born.

For 2020, Earth Day Network is putting a plan into action to bring people, institutions, businesses, and local governments together to build a new narrative for the planet and achieve a shift of consciousness.

The City Liaison will coordinate with EDN staff to promote the creation of local Earth Day 2020 committees in every city in the USA and abroad and contribute to making 2020 the biggest mobilization ever on behalf of the environment.

City Liaisons will play a critical role in turning Earth Day 2020 into a new historical environmental moment through helping identify the key local actors to launch Earth Day 2020 Committees that will put together and execute a plan for April 2020, and helping EDN follow-up on the execution.

Responsibilities of a City Liaison:

  • Learn about Earth Day, the plans for 2020 and the 50th anniversary and participate in webinars to be trained as a city liaison.
  • Identify an initial list of key nonprofits, community organizers, businesses, universities, unions, faith groups, and others in the city that might have an interest in organizing for Earth Day 2020 and joining an Earth Day 2020 committee.
  • Create a list of people and organizations and their contact information using a form provided by EDN.
  • Work with the EDN staff to set up a meeting in the city to create and launch a local Earth Day 2020 Committee, with local organizations taking the lead in planning for 2020, using the 2020 Earth Day Strategy Document as a starting point.
  • Participate in regular coordination calls with EDN staff and other City Liaisons to share experiences and ideas and plan the next phase of the work.
  • Consult and agree with EDN on additional steps and responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications (not all required):

  • Commitment to environmental causes.
  • Knowledge or experience working on environmental issues.
  • Knowledge of local environmental problems and initiatives.
  • Good knowledge of the city networks of non-profits and community organizations.
  • Community organizing experience.
  • Knowledge of local actors and existing local networks in areas other than the environment.
  • Alignment with Earth Day Network’s mission to broaden, diversify and activate the environmental movement.
  • Commitment to volunteer through Earth Day 2020 from 10 to 15 hours a week.
  • Excellent communication skills, and ability to work well independently and in a group.
