End Plastics
13-year-old Lillith Platt’s innovative approach to ending plastic pollution
June 16, 2022
In line with EARTHDAY.ORG’S End Plastic Pollution Campaign, 13 year-old Lillith Electra Platt works hard in her fight to end the use of single use plastics. At age 7, she started ‘Lilly’s Plastic Pickup’ where she worked to clean up plastic waste around her community.
Since then, Lilly has been successful in picking up over 150,000 pieces of plastic that she then sorts and posts to social media. Through her posts on Twitter and other social media platforms, she has been able to bring greater awareness to the various issues surrounding plastic pollution.
In addition to her work with plastic waste clean up, Lillith has begun to use her voice as an environmental activist. After being inspired by Greta Thunberg, Lilly decided she needed to take action and participate in climate strikes of her own.
During Lilly’s TEDxYouth@BSN talk in 2019, Lilly spoke about her role as a climate activist and stated she has been to over 57 strikes since she began her journey to advocate for climate change in 2018.
While Lillith Platt remains one of the youngest environmental activists, this hasn’t stopped her from taking a lead in creating a cleaner environment and brighter future for generations to come.
Over the past six or so years, Lilly has been given a number of awards that show her accomplishments. Some of these awards include Young Activist of the Year, International Eco Hero Award, and even being voted number 28 in Onalytica’s environmental influencers list in 2018.
In addition to these awards, Lilly Platt has been invited to share her voice with the public through various panels. One panel was hosted by the President of Egypt at the World Youth Forum in 2019, and another by the UN for their World Ocean Day Panel in 2020.
Although she may only be 13 years old, Lilly has been heard around the world and will continue to make strides towards making our world a better place. Through initiatives that clean up plastic waste to proposals that aim to limit the production of single use plastic products, these are only a few ways Lilly is inspiring others to take action and tackle climate change.
