Each year, EARTHDAY.ORG designates one artist to create the official Earth Day poster to inspire the Earth Day movement. Previous artists featured have included Robert Rauschenberg, Peter Max and Ivan Chermayeff.

This year, the official Earth Day 2021 poster has been created by Speto, acclaimed Brazilian street artist from São Paulo. Speto created this original artwork for Earth Day 2021 in his free-spirited style of folk art style reminiscent of “Cordel Literature”. His piece features young people, symbolizing the hope they represent for our future, working together in harmony while cradled in the benevolent antlers of a strong stag.

Speto sees the deer as a symbol of peace, serenity, and kindness; gentle, but not completely defenseless as it can be very strong and brave when the need arises. The sun represents prosperity through its life-giving energy.

About Speto:

Starting as early as 1985, Paulo Cesar Silva, or Speto, can be considered one of Brazil’s street art pioneers, which emerged after the end of the military dictatorship, when hip-hop culture coming from the suburbs of New York was brought to São Paulo.

Speto’s work is heavily influenced by Brazilians’ pop and native culture, especially ‘Cordel Literature’, little D.I.Y books sold by street vendors. Their style of drawing transfers heavily into his street art and murals and gives them a unique, woodcut-like look.

His works have already been exhibited in museums such as the Palais de Tokyo, in France, Museu Afro Brasil, in São Paulo, and in several galleries in the United States and Europe.
