EARTHDAY.ORG Launches ‘Rooted in Community’ Initiative to Expand Canopy Tree Project Toward 60 Million Trees by 2030
October 16, 2025
Washington, D.C. (October 15, 2025) – EARTHDAY.ORG, the global organizer of the Earth Day movement—observed by over one billion people each April 22—today announced the expansion of the Canopy Tree Project, through a new initiative, “Rooted in Community.” The program aims to broaden EARTHDAY.ORG’s global reach and help thousands of people in vulnerable villages and towns replant and restore their local environments.
For 16 years, the Canopy Tree Project has supported communities worldwide in restoring landscapes damaged by rising sea levels, extreme weather, and pollution. Through “Rooted in Community”, EARTHDAY.ORG will work hand in hand with local partners to prioritize vital forests and mangroves that provide food, shelter, fuel, and natural protection against flooding and erosion.
Since 2010 EARTHDAY.ORG has planted over 150 million trees in critical regions including the Sundarbans mangrove forests in India, Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, Mount Elgon in Uganda, forests across Canada’s Alberta and Saskatchewan provinces, and fruit tree projects near Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. These projects have restored vital ecosystems while supporting food security, climate resilience, and economic opportunities for local communities worldwide.
Rooted in Community has set the ambitious goal of planting 60 million trees by 2030, EARTHDAY.ORG’s 60th anniversary.
“We want to make a real impact empowering local communities, and “Rooted in Community” reflects our commitment to help people across the world living with the realities of tree loss by working with them on the ground to restore their trees and life-supporting forests,” said Kathleen Rogers, President, EARTHDAY.ORG
“The Canopy Tree Project is more than a tree-planting initiative, it’s a movement truly rooted in the communities we work alongside globally. We are creating long-term environmental and economic resilience for people and the planet. For 16 years we have been planting trees, and we know that whether we plant one tree or one million, that every single one matters to these communities,” said Hillary Bennett, Vice President of Development, EDO.
