Calverton students care for the Earth
Earth Day Activities at Calverton Elementary School
3400 Beltsville Road
Beltsville, MD 20705-3312
Morning Announcements
There will be a special short program on the morning announcements, including music and poetry. It will include a very special pledge to the planet, written by our kids, that we hope the whole school will say together.
9:00-10:00 - Flower Planting
Every classroom teacher will hold an essay (or similar) contest to select 2 students to participate in the flower planting. Weather permitting, planting will take place at 9:00 next Friday. We will have a feature in The Beltsville News about our celebrations and may include some of the essays like we did last year.
Also, bring some flowers to be planted if you'd like!
*New This Year* - SO Cool Art Project!!!
Ms. Levin found an awesome art project/fund raiser. She will give you special paper for your class on Earth Day. Each child should create their own design for an Earth Day/environmental T-shirt. Ms. Levin will send them in to a company that will scan them into the computer. Parents (and staff!) can go online and order T-shirts with their child's design or any design they like. Calverton will get back $5 for each shirt purchased. Please find time on Earth Day for your class to design their shirts! (Please talk to Ms. Levin if you have questions about this project.)
School Grounds Clean-Up - timing as convenient for you - please try to do it on Earth Day if you can!
Please take your class outside to clean up your area outside the school at some point convenient for you next week. Please pick up any visible litter and do any trimming and weeding you think appropriate. Please make sure that you stop by the office to pick up gloves. We have enough gloves for each student to wear one glove. They should not touch any litter with an ungloved hand!
- PreK, K, and 1st have the lower grades' playground in front of the school and vicinity

Tree Planting
After school, Save the World will be planting a dozen flowering trees around our campus. Each grade level will be able to "adopt" a tree and plant flowers around it or otherwise beautify the area around it as they like. If you have a digging shovel that we can borrow, we'd appreciate it
