While key announcements and pledges were made, it is difficult to discern how much impact this summit will actually have since a treaty will not be made for another fifteen months.

Mon, 29 Sep 2014 20:30:19 +0000 Earth Day Network 267931 at http://www.earthday.org UN Climate Summit http://www.earthday.org/blog/2014/09/24/un-climate-summit
Jay Inslee, the Washington state governor hit the nail on the head: “We are the first generation to feel the impacts of climate change, and the last generation that can do something about it.” And he is not the only one thinking that way this week. Ban Ki Moon, former US Vice President Al Gore, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, and hundreds of thousands climate activists have turned a spotlight onto environmental change this week.

Wed, 24 Sep 2014 21:31:02 +0000 Earth Day Network 267929 at http://www.earthday.org Hult Prize 2014 http://www.earthday.org/blog/2014/09/22/hult-prize-2014
The Hult Prize is a $1,000,000 prize award to the most compelling social business ideas. Open to students across the world, the Hult Prize aims to identify and launch innovative enterprises designed to tackle grave issues faced by billions. Each year, a critical social problem is selected and a challenge issued. This year’s challenge highlighted the need for more accessible health care: solving non-communicable diseases in the Urban Slum. Each team must develop a start-up organization aimed at building a sustainable and feasible social enterprise.

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 21:56:23 +0000 Earth Day Network 267928 at http://www.earthday.org 2014 Living Green DC Expo http://www.earthday.org/blog/2014/09/16/2014-living-green-dc-expo
September 11th was the 2014 DC Living Green Expo at the University of District of Columbia. Nearly 50 exhibitors, from Green businesses, energy-saving devices, green roofs, locally grown food, urban forests, urban biking, and green infrastructure helped attendees discover why DC is steadily becoming the model of a sustainable city. Green technology is the driving force to develop sustainable living and is the most effective method to reduce both individual and societal use of the Earth's natural resources.

Tue, 16 Sep 2014 16:08:48 +0000 Earth Day Network 267926 at http://www.earthday.org China and India’s leaders not to attend upcoming Climate Summit http://www.earthday.org/blog/2014/09/15/china-and-india%E2%80%99s-leaders-not-attend-upcoming-climate-summit
Leaders of government, finance, business and civil society will meet in New York City on September 23rd for the UN Climate Summit. From reducing emissions to strengthening climate resilience, the Summit’s goals strive for a healthier Earth through sustainable practices. By the end of the week, nations and corporations hope to have started negotiations on a legal agreement to lower carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency through renewable resources, and debut a new, green business coalition: We Mean Business.

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 21:32:20 +0000 Earth Day Network 267925 at http://www.earthday.org EPA's Clean Power Plan http://www.earthday.org/blog/2014/09/15/epas-clean-power-plan
President Barack Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency recently took a significant step in combating climate change by proposing the Clean Power Plan, a series of standards that would limit the amount of carbon emissions released from power plants. However, these restrictions to cut carbon pollution output by 30% below 2005 levels would not be put into place until 2030, therefore ignoring the urgent need to prevent widespread climate change.

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 21:24:39 +0000 Earth Day Network 267924 at http://www.earthday.org Get Vending-Machine Healthy! http://www.earthday.org/blog/2014/09/15/get-vending-machine-healthy
Too often we associate healthier foods with less satisfying meal choices—just look at our obesity rates. According to the Food Research and Action Center, more than two-thirds of US adults and one-third of US children are overweight or obese. Instead of concentrating our consumption on fruits and vegetables in correct proportions, as a nation we are gobbling down sugar and high-fructose corn syrup in as many different forms as we can get our hands on.

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 21:18:06 +0000 Earth Day Network 267923 at http://www.earthday.org Topsy Turvy Bus http://www.earthday.org/blog/2014/09/08/topsy-turvy-bus
Hi everyone! My name is Naomi Tamura and I have the honor of interning here at the Earth Day Network this fall. I am a freshman at American University planning to study international relations with a focus on the peace process in the Middle East. This past summer I worked at Camp Galil, a Jewish, labor Zionist summer camp in southeastern Pennsylvania. One of our main values at Galil is the idea of collective responsibility towards our environment.

Mon, 08 Sep 2014 14:10:00 +0000 Earth Day Network 267922 at http://www.earthday.org Passenger Pigeon Centenary http://www.earthday.org/blog/2014/09/03/passenger-pigeon-centenary
September 1, 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the extinction of the passenger pigeon. This bird’s population numbered 3 to 5 billion individuals before European settlement of North America and was still numbering in the billions in the 1860’s then, in less than 50 years it was completely extinct. How is this possible?

Wed, 03 Sep 2014 16:20:22 +0000 Earth Day Network 267921 at http://www.earthday.org Women’s Equality Day http://www.earthday.org/blog/2014/08/26/women%E2%80%99s-equality-day
Today we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, 94 years after the 19th amendment secured women’s right to vote in the United States.

Since that momentous day, women have continued to eagerly push through barriers and make history. They have opened doors into the workforce and continue to break through the proverbial glass ceiling in countless sectors. Young women now are more likely to have a college degree than men—a huge social shift from even a few years prior.

Tue, 26 Aug 2014 20:10:47 +0000 Earth Day Network 267920 at http://www.earthday.org
