The Movement Grows

With only 53 days left until Earth Day 2012, the response from the international community to Mobilize the Earth™ has been spectacular. Check out some highlights below, and don’t forget to login and register your own Earth Day Event today!
In the Middle East, the UM Alyateem Foundation (UMF), a non-profit education network for children and adults in Iraq, is already hard at work planning their event on April 22nd. For Earth Day 2012, UMF has established a group of 12 students who will be working on environmental projects in their school from now until Earth Day. The group will work as Environmental Monitors to make sure that students are acting in an environmentally-conscious manner. The group will monitor waste collection and recycling efforts and lead a tree planting with other students to celebrate Earth Day 2012.
In Asia, Earth Day is beginning to pick up steam. Several great organizations have been creating events as well as contributing to A Billion Acts of Green®. One such organization, Les Enfants du Dragon, has shown that development and the environment really do go hand in hand. As part of its commitment to the environment, the organization has contributed several Acts of Green to the campaign by installing drinking water treatment plants in villages throughout Vietnam and by digging wells in order to ensure a continued water supply from the Mekong River.
In South America, La Asociacion Ecologica Vidas Verdes plans to participate in Earth Day 2012 through a massive tree-planting project called “A Sembrar se ha Dicho” in the San Juan de Miraflores region of Lima, Peru. They will be planting 50,000 trees, with hopes of involving some of Peru’s highest elected officials in the event. Vidas Verdes has been active on behalf of the environment since its creation in 1991. Its work revolves around three basic pillars: reforestation, recycling, and environmental education. Thus far, Vidas Verdes has contributed 521,713 trees to A Billion Acts of Green.
These are just a few of the great events that are already starting to take shape all over the world. Join us and others as we work to Mobilize the Earth and make April 22, 2012, one of the most important days in the history of the global environmental movement.
A Billion Acts of Green® Update:
A few weeks ago, we moved past 500 million Acts of Green registered on the Earth Day Network website. Since then, the response to continue the campaign has been tremendous. Organizations from all over the world have sent in their environmental pledges to better the planet one action at a time. Acts of Green have come through in all sizes. Some include large-scale tree planting organizations like ENO Programme based out of Finland, which recently contributed 100 million trees as part of the world’s largest tree planting day. Others include smaller commitments, like a pledge from the Washington-based cell phone recycling organization CellSeattle to recycle 100 cell phones from the Seattle area by Earth Day.
Remember, no action for the planet is too small. Log on to A Billion Acts of Green today, and commit your action to join the world’s largest environmental service movement!
