Unlike many other Caribbean islands, Grenada still relies heavily on agriculture; it is the second largest producer of nutmeg in the world, and agricultural output makes up some 90 percent of the exports from the country. As the temperature of the seawater rises, coral bleaching occurs, threatening the tourism industry. Hurricane Ivan hit Grenada on September 7, 2004, causing widespread damage and killing 39 people.

The Convention on Biological Diversity

The Convention on Biological Diversity was inspired by the world community's growing commitment to sustainable development. It represents a dramatic step forward in the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
