EARTHDAY.ORG Hails Peru’s Climate Education Initiative as a Global Model for Sustainable Development

Washington DC (June 6, 2025) –EARTHDAY.ORG applauds the government of Peru for its bold step forward in advancing climate education nationwide. On World Environment Day, June 5, 2025, President Dina Ercilia Boluarte oversaw the signing of a transformative agreement between Peru’s Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) and Ministry of Education (MINEDU) to integrate environmental and climate education into schools across the country.

This groundbreaking cooperation agreement establishes a framework for curriculum development, teacher training, and student engagement in sustainability and biodiversity protection. It positions Peru as a leading example in Latin America and globally, demonstrating how national governments can institutionalize climate literacy as a cornerstone of sustainable development.

“Peru’s commitment reflects exactly what EARTHDAY.ORG has been advocating for: the integration of climate education into national policy,” said Kathleen Rogers, President of EARTHDAY.ORG. “We commend Peru’s leadership and call on all nations to follow this example ahead of COP30 in Belém.”

Held at the Teresa González de Fanning School in Lima, the signing ceremony also included the swearing-in of 120 new student environmental brigade members—a clear sign that youth engagement is at the heart of this national strategy.

The initiative aligns with EARTHDAY.ORG’s global campaign to make climate education a universal human right and a pillar of every country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

“Peru has shown the world that education is not just part of the climate solution—it is the foundation,” said Rodolfo Beltrán, Regional Director of EARTHDAY.ORG for South America. “This agreement is a beacon of hope and a model for others, especially as the world looks toward COP30 in the Amazon.”
