Love Your Mother: Honoring Moms and Mother Earth

This Earth Day, hundreds of people came together in Times Square, New York City, and over 1.5 million watched online as we helped to mark the 55th anniversary of Earth Day with a live concert. We partnered with OMMM and Good News corporation to send a powerful message that loving Mother Earth must be more than symbolic; it must be tangible, actionable, and urgent.

Our very first Earth Action Day Ambassador, Grammy nominated artist Antonique Smith, a passionate environmental advocate, reminded everyone that the fight for justice includes caring for the planet. The event brought optimism and hope to the crowd and although it was just one of hundreds of thousands of Earth Day events across the globe  -but this Times Square event was especially poignant as this concert was called “Love Your Mother”.

In the U.S we celebrate Mother’s Day every May 11th. Many nation’s across the world have their own special days to honor Mom’s too. Because Mothers nurture us, protect us, and teach us. They do what they can to give us what we need to be happy and successful in life, but their energy and resources are not unlimited. It’s not sustainable to take and take without giving back. Mother Earth is the same – we own her  the air we breathe, shelter, sustenance, wonder  – she has made all  life possible. But if we don’t care for her, she will wilt.

Our world is saturated with chemicals and pollutants that harm both the planet, wildlife, ecosystems and habitats but also present and future generations. Plastic chemicals are just one type of poisons. For decades, plastic was seen as a miracle material: durable, cheap, convenient. But today, we know better. Microplastics and their additive chemicals are infecting Mother Earth. They are in our soil, our water, oceans, food, even our own bodies as our mothers and children are ingesting and inhaling them .

A new study published in early 2025 examined over 175 placentas and found that microplastic concentrations were significantly higher in those from premature births. There’s evidence that plastics might impact our ability to become Moms with research linking microplastics and their additive chemicals with miscarriages and even infertility.

A study published by Fertility and Sterility measured the levels of Bisphenol A (BPA), a plastic chemical,  in pregnant women in an effort to determine the relationship between BPA and miscarriage. They concluded that the median level of BPA among women who miscarried was higher than that among women with live births, even when controlling for such identity markers as BMI and age.

Pet moms, this affects you too. Plastic chemicals found in your pets’ toys, food, beds, and more have been linked to a range of health issues from cancer to embryo development problems

Plastic Planet – What Can You Do?

In the last 30 years, we’ve increased our plastic use sixfold. It’s used in the kitchen, in our clothes, 70%b of all fast fashion is made from plastic textile, our toiletries, carpets, furniture, even our tea bags are glued together with it – or worse still plastic material nylon is used to create posh looking, silky tea bags! So in the face of all this what can we do to care for Mother Earth and our own Moms?

One gift you can give your Mother Earth is to make a conscious choice to avoid using or buying plastics. The second thing you can do that your Mom might especially like this Mother’s Day is to vacuum. A clean home isn’t just a nice gesture; it’s a gift to your mother’s health because vacuuming is the best way to suck up all the plastic fibers in household dust.

Thirdly, join us in standing up to plastics. Read our content and help us to spread the word about the human health costs of both microplastics and the chemicals that leach from them. Mobilize your family and community to reject plastics. Sign our Global Plastic Treaty Petition and support the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act.

We know that if we work together we can make our voices and our actions matter. Coverage of Earth Day increased year on year, from 2024 to 2025, by a staggering 900 %. This is signaling that compassion for the planet is rising and if we work together we can, and we will, make a difference.

So as we honor our moms this Mother’s Day, with cards, calls, or flowers, let’s also honor the mother who gave us everything: the Earth. Say thank you by acting with intention. If you’re still looking for a gift, consider one that gives back. A plastic free, 100% organic cotton T-shirt from our shop isn’t just a cool fashion statement — it supports our mission at EARTHDAY.ORG. Our “Love Your Mother” items are perfect for the occasion and there’s even one designed by Ringo Starr. You can find these items and more in our store!

Remember too that every day is Earth Day, so take actions every day. Earth Action Day is packed with inspiration or to share what you’ve done, see our Earth Action Day webpage. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there and to Mother Earth too – let’s take care of her.
