MobilizeU is bringing the environmental movement to college campuses around the world. Since its launch in 2012, more than 500 U.S. colleges and universities and 380 global colleges and universities have joined. Recognizing the power, energy, innovative abilities, and organizing capacity of college students across the planet, MobilizeU has created a program to help students, faculty, and staff coordinate environmental events and initiatives on campus. The program provides a framework for implementing successful Teach-In events, a method used at the first Earth Day in 1970, to create a series of lectures and discussions designed to ignite action.
Earth Day offers an opportunity and a platform for college campuses across Virginia to take part in a national Earth Day movement in 2019 — and beyond. Unprecedented global destruction and rapid reduction of plant and wildlife populations have led to climate change deforestation and habitat loss. That’s why, in 2019, Earth Day Network is focused on work to Protect Our Species.
Example initiatives that your university can consider for Earth Day 2019 and beyond:
UVA in Charlottesville created a interactive map of sustainability initiatives happening at the university and in the community called the Green Guide. The guide allows you to tour the grounds and learn more about sustainable practices happening at UVA and find out how you can become involved. It also teaches users about how their surroundings help or hurt the environment, such as pointing out LEED certified buildings or restored wildlife habitat.
The committee on sustainability at William & Mary organizes a Green Fee award each year, which awards funds to be dedicated to sustainability projects around campus. The program began as a grassroots student initiative in 2008. Since then, it has funded more than $1 million worth of sustainability projects led by students, faculty, and staff.
The resources below are designed to help you educate, inspire, and organize your community to take action and mobilize towards the goal of Protecting Our Species.
