Earth Day 2019: Central Virginia | Earth Day Network

Earth Day Network will leverage the power of Earth Day 2019 to drive a sustainability action wave across Virginia. Revolving around the global need to protect our species, Earth Day Network is asking the community of Central Virginia to join together in driving new sustainability commitments and accelerating existing ones.

Our Challenge: To Protect Species Across the Globe

The rapid reduction of plant and wildlife populations are directly linked to causes driven by human activity: climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, poaching, unsustainable agriculture, pollution and pesticides to name a few. High development rates in Central Virginia have also led to habitat fragmentation and water pollution. If we do not act now, extinction may be humanity’s most enduring legacy. Here are some quick facts on the current wave of extinction, and additional information about this problem can be found here. The good news is that the rate of extinction can still be slowed, and many of our declining, threatened and endangered species can still recover if we work together.

Our Local Focus: Community Greening Efforts in Central Virginia

Central Virginia has become a hotspot for sustainability initiatives. From the University of Virginia, which unveiled its Sustainability Plan on Earth Day 2016, to the city of Richmond, which launched RVA Green 2050 to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050, Virginia has taken a leading role in the environmental movement. On a smaller scale, local restaurants and farms have taken action by providing access to fresh produce and county governments have been active in hosting environmental based events such as festivals and races.

Earth Day Network is seeking to partner with key stakeholders in the region including mayors and other local officials, sustainable businesses, university leaders and student organizations, k-12 school teachers, students and administrators, environmental and other non-governmental organizations, faith and other local leaders.

Our goals are to:

  • Educate and raise awareness about the accelerating rate of extinction of millions of species and the causes and consequences of this phenomenon.
  • Achieve major policy victories that protect broad groups of species as well as individual species and their habitats.
  • Build and activate a global movement that embraces nature and its values.
  • Encourage individual actions such as adopting plant-based diet and stopping pesticide and herbicide use.

Earth Day offers an opportunity and a platform for Central Virginia to amplify its actions and initiatives, as well as launch new ones in 2019 and beyond. There are so many ways to get involved. Join the community, Join the movement.
