Earth Day Virginia | Earth Day Network

Earth Day Virginia will leverage the power of Earth Day 2020 to drive a sustainability action wave across Virginia. 2020 will mark Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary! As the global coordinator of Earth Day, Earth Day Network is working to make sure that Earth Day 2020 is the most diverse global mobilization in defense of the environment in world history.

Earth Day Network is asking the Commonwealth of Virginia to join together to combat climate change and restore, conserve and protect our environment. Communities across Virginia are facing the devastating impacts of fracking, sea level rise, climate change, loss of biodiversity and other environmental challengesNow is the time for building a more diverse, inclusive and united environmental movement and accelerating the green economy!

Our Local Focus: Community Greening Efforts in Virginia

Virginia is working on several campaigns regarding climate change. From the mountains to the coast, Virginia is taking a lead role in the environmental movement. In Charlottesville, the University of Virginia unveiled its Sustainability Plan on Earth Day 2016; Richmond launched RVA Green 2050 to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050and Virginia Beach released the Comprehensive Sea Level Rise and Recurrent Flooding Response Plan.

We must support the VA Coastal Protection Act and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). The VA Coastal Protection Act would generate up to $200 million per year to invest in adaptation measures in Hampton Roads and clean energy statewide, all while lowering emissions.

On a local scale, restaurants and farms have taken action by providing access to fresh produce. Localities have been active in hosting environmental based festivals and races. Earth Day Virginia is seeking to partner with key stakeholders in the region includingelected officials, businesses, university leaders and student organizations, k-12 school teachers, students and administrators, non-governmental organizations, environmental justice, and faith groups.

Earth Day offers an opportunity and a platform for Virginia to amplify its actions and initiatives, as well as launch new ones in the future. There are so many ways to get involved. Join the community, Join the movement.
