To Plant One Million Trees in Honor of the Home Entertainment Debut of AVATAR

LOS ANGELES (April 14, 2010) – Earth Day Network today announced that AVATAR director James Cameron is confirmed to speak at The Climate Rally on Sunday, April 25 in Washington, D.C. for the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. This follows another recent announcement from Earth Day Network and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to plant one million trees globally this year.  The AVATAR Blu-ray and DVD will be available everywhere on Earth Day, April 22.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Earth Day Network, the international non-profit organization that coordinates Earth Day annually and works year-round on climate change, environmental education and broadening the environmental movement, are partnering for the Home Tree Initiative to plant native trees in 15 countries in 2010. This program is part of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s parent company News Corporation’s Global Energy Initiative, a commitment to reducing the company’s impacts on the climate and the environment, transforming the way it uses energy, and engages the global audience with the issues.

Earth Day Network will collaborate with established environmental NGOs, forestry services and government agencies to plant trees native to each region in 15 countries including, The United States, Canada, The United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain, Brazil, Mexico and Haiti. Earth Day Network is committed to working with experienced international partners to plant trees.

To help raise awareness and support for the initiative, Fox has created “The AVATAR Program.” Through a unique code found inside the AVATAR Blu-ray and DVD, consumers can register at www.avatarmovie.com. Those fans will be able to adopt one of the one million trees being planted on behalf of Earth Day and receive a virtual home tree to represent that actual tree. Through Earth Day Network’s Billion Acts of Green® program, those adopting a tree will be able to count their action toward the goal of one Billion Acts of Green® on Earth Day Network’s Web site at www.earthday.org.

“We find ourselves facing the greatest challenge of our time, saving our natural world from ourselves,” said director James Cameron. “With the 40th anniversary of Earth Day quickly approaching, the time has come to stand up and be warriors for the Earth.  AVATAR takes place on a distant world, but it’s really about this miracle planet we have right here.”

“At the core of AVATAR lies a message of empowerment and self-discovery,” said Mike Dunn, President Worldwide of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. “Our initiative to plant one million trees allows us to promote a healthy, sustainable planet, while hopefully empowering others to be get involved.”

Climate change is a worldwide problem, and we have a universal responsibility to protect the world’s natural resources from man’s exploitation,” said Kathleen Rogers, President, Earth Day Network. “For the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, as we rally together for the planet and our future, we are proud to stand next to environmental stewards like James Cameron and concerned citizens from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, who are taking action in the fight against climate change.”
