EARTH DAY NETWORK ADDRESSES CLIMATE CHANGE
AT AARP CONFERENCE ON DIVERSITY AND AGING
IN LOS ANGELES

WASHINGTON, DC - Earth Day Network (EDN) is participating in the AARP 2007 Conference on Diversity and Aging in the 21st Century in Los Angeles this week, which will focus in part on environmental justice issues. EDN Campaign for Communities Director Vivian Buckingham will present on the challenges specific to climate change during her participation in the workshop Environmental Justice in Diverse Communities on Wednesday, June 20th. This workshop will also feature the renowned author and activist Winona LaDuke.

"Climate change will have much more of an impact on the most vulnerable sectors of society in the United States and around the world, including the poor, the elderly and many minority communities, and we are simply not prepared," said Buckingham. "Earth Day Network is very pleased to be participating in this event and lauds AARP for its forward thinking and its support of older Americans."

AARP's conference, to be held at the Hotel Bonaventure in Los Angeles June 19-21, will address how components of diversity, such as culture, gender, sexual orientation, disability, race and ethnicity, geographic location and age will influence public policy, marketing, programming, service delivery and community outreach in the 21st Century.

EDN recently (April) presented the workshop Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities for Women at the AARP Womenvision Summit in Tucson, Arizona. Speakers included Teresa Heinz Kerry, one of the nation's leading environmental advocates, and Susan Joy Hassol, who wrote the widely acclaimed HBO documentary Too Hot Not to Handle. EDN is also a Co-convenor of the National Latino Congreso Oct. 5 - 9 in Los Angeles.
