TMA Green Club
Students and community members harvest tomatoes, basil and bell peppers at Thurgood Marshall Academy in Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The edible school garden at Thurgood Marshall was built in May 2009 by a team of Earth Day Network staff. The school has an active Green Club, with forty members who maintain the garden. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Earth Day Network will be expanding this garden effort, facilitating a mentorship program between Thurgood Marshall students and neighboring elementary school children. The expanded efforts will include a greenhouse, an outdoor cooking classroom, thirty raised garden beds, rain barrels, rows of crops, and a butterfly garden.
