Representing Civil Society on the Road to Rio™

As we inch closer to Rio+20, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Earth Day Network staff is participating in the second Preparatory Committee meeting in New York, also known as “Prepcom 2.”  As part of the Rio+20 Women’s Steering Committee of the Women’s Major Group, we are promoting policies that engage and empower women as an effective solution to sustainable development.

Rio+20, or the UN 2012 Conference on Sustainable Development, is the twentieth anniversary of the first Earth Summit in 1992. This original conference established goals and strategies for achieving sustainable development. Environment and development organizations seek to make Rio+20 another watershed moment in the environmental movement.

In preparation for Prepcom 2, we participated yesterday in a conference workshop on how to involve non-country groups. It was resoundingly agreed that civil society needs to build public support for the event, and to engage the economic sector, which is currently seen as least involved and integrated in the Rio+20 process.
