Trees = Life
Have you ever heard the Chinese proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is right now”?
Planting a tree is one of the most simple and effective ways to celebrate Earth Day each year. Not only does this action make the world a greener place, it also helps limit the dangerous impacts of climate change for future generations. Earth Day Network is working with organizations from all over the world to plant trees, and as it stands we know of more than 45 million being planted in honor of Earth Day 2011! Each one of these trees is valued for their environmental benefits. Here we highlight one organization that is taking on tree plantings as well as working with subsistence farmers to improve their livelihoods sustainably.
TIST (The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program) is contributing 10 million trees to A Billion Acts of Green® for Earth Day 2011. TIST trains subsistence farmers on growing agriculturally useful crops in their area, and support their entrepreneurial efforts through carbon offset sales. Truly, planting a tree is one of the simplest things you can do for the planet, but so is rethinking your purchasing power.
As the Chinese proverb says, the time is now. So get out there and do something for the planet!
