Just Say No—to Oil

Earth Day 2010 was not only a day where hundreds of millions spoke out for their environment worldwide, but it also saw the massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  What has been achieved since, in the cleanup and prevention of future disasters?  President Obama’s oil-spill commission came out with a report this week, recommending stiffer fines, tougher regulation and an oversight safety organization in order to prevent a repeat of this environmental catastrophe.   The report also suggests reforming the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) to ensure stricter rules, more funding, and more experienced leadership.

But what can be done by individuals around the world to help prevent future environmental disasters? As we come closer to Earth Day 2011, here are a few ideas:
• Learn about the history of the modern environmental movement and how it was impacted by major oil spills in California and Alaska;
• Work with your local leaders to hold a dialogue on your community’s local environmental threats through Global Days of Conversation
