"Green" Your Waterways for Earth Day!

The majority of our planet is covered in water, but we forget how precious this delicate substance is. Earth Day Network is proud to announce the success of our partners at World Water Monitoring Day™. World Water Monitoring Day is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of their local fresh water bodies. In 2010, more than 200,000 people on six continents monitored the condition of their local water bodies! In honor of this accomplishment, the organizers of World Water Monitoring Day are pledging the exact number of 212,502 Acts of Green to Earth Day Network’s A Billion Acts of Green® campaign.

World Water Monitoring Day is officially celebrated on September 18, but people are encouraged to participate anywhere from March 22 (World Water Day) through December 31. Both Earth Day Network’s educational resources and World Water Monitoring Day’s materials teach about water environment, and for a more hands-on approach, World Water Monitoring Day has new test kits for 2011 that anyone can use to test their local fresh water’s environmental health.

Over 45 million Acts of Green have been pledged so far by individuals, schools, organizations and governments. Pledge your Act of Green and celebrate World Water Day, World Water Monitoring Day, and Earth Day for a water-wise future!
