Dept. of Ed. Green Ribbon Schools Announced

On Earth Day, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the 48 2014 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools and 9 District Sustainability Awardees in Washington, D.C. Duncan was joined by Acting Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality Mike Boots, who praised the selected schools and districts saying, "Schools all over the country can look to today's honorees as models for creating a healthier learning environment while lowering energy bills and preparing students for success in the 21st century economy. The schools and districts being honored today are taking smart, innovative steps to reduce environmental impacts and teach students the kinds of sustainable practices that they can carry with them into their homes and future careers." The announcement was streamed live via webcast from the U.S. Department of Education.

This year’s honorees come from 27 states and demonstrate how all schools can reduce costs and environmental impact, promote better health and wellness; and ensure effective environmental education, including civics, STEM and green career pathways. Among the honored schools, 39 are public, including three charter, one magnet and three career and technical schools, and nine are private schools. More than 40% of the awardees serve disadvantaged populations. A report with highlights on the 57 honorees can be found here.

The Secretary Duncan also announced today a post-secondary category for the award to honor the exciting process being made at colleges and universities around the country.

Last year, Earth Day Network partner school, Yu Ying PCS based in Washington, DC was a Green Ribbon Award recipient. Earth Day Network partnered with Yu Ying back in November of 2012 to help build an observation deck and outdoor classroom so students can utilize a storm water pond for experimental learning. The deck was built to bolster the Green Ribbon Schools application for Yu Ying, and all the hard work paid off!
