A Billion Acts of Green: Adjust Your Water Heater
It's time for a new Billion Acts of Green action! This month’s action is quite simple: Adjust Your Water Heater. The average homeowner spends about $400-600 annually on heating water, accounting for 14-18% of the total energy bill.
During installation, water heaters are typically set at 140°F. However, the average person can only withstand 120°F water without burning. Turning down the temperature just 20 degrees will not only conserve wasted energy, but it will also save you $30-60 annually. Best of all, there is no cost.
For specific instructions on how to adjust your thermostat, check out the US Department of Energy’s webpage.
