#BEBOTTLEFREE Moves On
Our planet has a plastic problem. Each year more than 350 billion plastic bottles end up in landfills, where they can take up to 450 years to decompose! We need to address our worldwide obsession with plastic now, before it’s too late. That is why Earth Day Network devoted a prominent action on our environmental service campaign A Billion Acts of Green® to stop the use of disposable plastic worldwide.
But that’s not all. We understand that the real way to make change happen is by doing, so we are working with one of the most progressive and forward thinking collection of individuals anywhere…university students!
Across the country, colleges and universities have been taking a hard stance against plastic. To date over 90 universities across the country have implemented policies limiting the use of disposable plastic on campus. Almost all these changes stem from student led awareness efforts on campus! The progress has been impressive. Schools like Brown University and the University of California Berkeley have banned the sale of bottled water on campus, while other schools like Princeton University have reduction efforts in place that limit the amount of plastic that can be used.
Because of the importance of this issue, Earth Day Network is working to support and expand the anti-plastic movement. Currently Earth Day Network is working with Yale University to move toward banning plastic bottles on campus. Our #BEBOTTLEFREE campus effort will increase awareness about the enormous burden that plastic places on the planet and support Yale university students, led by environmental groups on campus, as they move to lead the nation in becoming plastic bottle free.
For Earth Day 2014, we hope Yale University can serve as a model for how students can organize plastic awareness campaigns on their campus. The more colleges and universities that support this issue the more progress we will make!
