Take a Trip Around the World

We now have less than 40 days until Earth Day 2012. Check out the weekly international highlights to see what is going on in your part of the world:

In Africa, Earth Day Network partner Pole Pole Foundation (POPOF) has committed 4 million trees to A Billion Acts of Green® in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). POPOF is planting the trees to help conserve the Kahuzi-Biega National Park. The park is one of the few natural habitats of the Eastern Lowland Gorillas. For Earth Day, POPOF is working with villagers to create tree nurseries within the park and teach students how to grow and care for seedlings.

In Europe, Earth Day Network’s new partner, Cell of Alternative Youth Activities - KEAN, has been working with young people in Greece to spread environmental education throughout the country. The organization works in “cells” that focus on specific regions of Greece, allowing for a dynamic and inclusive environment. With projects such as Planetbook, a board game in which environmental issues play a prominent role, and activities that work for the improvement of the environment, KEAN has been an important conservation organization across the region for some time. For this year’s Earth Day, KEAN will be participating with its own activities that highlight the environment across Greece

In Bermuda, The Bermuda National Trust is hosting an environmentally-themed video competition for students across the country. Students aged 11 to 18 are encouraged to submit short video entries that highlight their individual Acts of Green and include one of three potential themes—“For the Island,” “For the Earth,” or “For the Sargasso Sea.” The National Trust hopes that the competition will empower young people, highlight their efforts on behalf of the environment, and raise awareness about the connection between lifestyle choices and the future of Bermuda. The winners of the contest will be announced on April 22nd, in honor of Earth Day, and their videos will be screened the following week. The winning videos will also be shown on national television and as part of a local film festival.

More and more people all over the world are helping Earth Day Network to Mobilize the Earth™ on April 22nd.  Make sure your community is next to join! For more information on how you can participate, visit www.earthday.org/2012
