Tell Congress to Save Safe Routes to School!!!

Does your child ever walk or bike to school? Tens of thousands of students, and many adult counterparts, take such a journey on a daily basis. Yet the safety of these efforts – basic staples for any neighborhood like functional crosswalks, stop signs, or sidewalks, etc. – is now in jeopardy due to another inane proposal from Congress. Specifically, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee is scheduled to vote on Thursday, February 2nd on a bill to eliminate ALL funds for Safe Routes to School. Here at the Earth Day Network, we believe this recent move by Congress would be exceptionally detrimental to the safety and health of our nation’s youth and thousands of communities nationwide.

Here’s one reason why: 30% of children’s traffic deaths occur when kids are walking or bicycling and are struck by cars. Shocking, right!? But the Safe Routes to School program, with the help of federal funding, has improved the safety around more than 10,000 schools nationwide. Additionally, Safe Routes to School gets children active and creates an opportunity for daily physical activity and improved health. We believe such success stories are commendable and should be replicated nationwide as a core facet of green and healthy school communities.

Not everyone in America can have their children chauffeured to school in an entourage of bullet-proof SUVs. So privileged members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where is the logic in eliminating funding for this program? How do you expect tens of thousands of children to get to school safely without these necessary funds? Safe Routes to School has been a bipartisan success for years – creating thousands of safe, convenient, healthy and fun opportunities for our nation’s youth to bicycle and walk to and from school. In short, this commonsense program shouldn’t come to an end. Tell the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee NOW that they should fully fund the Safe Routes to School program – period! Our nation’s schoolchildren deserve a safe route to school.
