To address the issues associated with climate change, the Town of Babylon is focusing on increasing climate mitigation efforts by pioneering leadership in municipal energy and sustainability initiatives.

 

 Notable projects

Long Island Green Homes Program

The program enables homeowners to finance energy-efficiency improvements. It will "help combat global warming by reducing carbon emissions by 65,000-135,000 tons, reduce energy costs for homeowners and create 6,600 new green collar jobs".

 

→ Estimated to reduce the carboon footprint of each participating household by 20-40%.

 

Geothermal Installation in the Wyandanch Area 

This prospective geothermal installation will draw solar heat and winter cooling that has been stored in the aquifer below.

According to the Town Supervisor, Rich Schaffer: “this system will provide clean, renewable energy 24/7 365 days a year"

 

 

 

Covantage Scholarships

Launched in 2008, these scholarships are awarded to student school projects with an environmental theme.
