The Green Schools Movement Has Come of Age

At its second annual conference, the green schools movement today witnessed an informed and passionate keynote from none other than Arne Duncan himself, the U.S. Education Secretary. In it, Sec. Duncan proclaimed that green schools are “engines of innovation” and “critically important” to paving the way for America’s educational system and student-body to be competitive in the 21st century.

The MobilizeU Movement is underway! With just a few short weeks until March 29th, the start of the competition, college students from all over the world are gearing up to generate acts of green on their campuses. So far, over 70 students internationally have mobilized their campus communities, which span six continents, 18 countries, and 24 U.S. states. We are thrilled to see so many colleges and universities participating in MobilizeU, and we can’t wait to see how many more schools will be mobilized!

The vibrant colors that are iconic to the coast of Australia and the namesake of the Coral Sea are in danger from the pressures of climate change, pollution and ocean acidification. They are further stressed by the activities of commercial fishing and mining in the area. If these practices are allowed to continue, it is doubtful that the area will resemble the picturesque undersea treasure that it is today in the near future.

On February 17, 2012, EPA finalized its final Reanalysis of Key Issues Related to Dioxin Toxicity and Response to NAS Comments, Volume 1. Twenty-seven years in the making, the delay of this report was due to resistance from the chemical industry. The history of the agency's efforts to regulate Dioxin is chroniclized here and shows that this process began back in 1984.

I wanted to think a little more on this concept of Green Recreation. Sure, going out on a bike, run or kayak outside means that no electricity was used to light and heat your gym; no energy was used to power your treadmill or lifecycle. Of course that’s a greener way to go.
But, I still think what is really important is that we learn the outdoors is our friend. How can you want to save the earth if you’re not really comfortable being on it?
