EDN Thanks TreeSisters for Supporting Trees for the Earth

Earth Day Network would like to thank TreeSisters, a feminist tree-planting organization, for committing over a million trees to its Trees for the Earth campaign on Tuesday.  TreeSisters was started in 2010 by Clare Dubois with the goal of mobilizing women through tree planting.  The idea behind the organization is to encourage women to return to nature and direct feminine leadership to reforest the tropics.   TreeSisters is notable, not just for the great work it does, but also for its entirely female leadership team and board. It’s these women who decide who to partner with and what projects to undertake. In order to inspire action, TreeSisters created a map of five choices that encourage earth-positive attitudes and a community of women. They also focus their planting in the tropics, because tropical forests are the most biodiverse on earth, stabilize the weather, and capture more atmospheric carbon than any other kind of forest. The TreeSisters campaign is “part feminine empowerment and part reforestation,” aligning it with Earth Day Network’s Trees for the Earth campaign and its mission more broadly. The Trees for the Earth Campaign launched in 2016 with the goal to plant 7.8 billion trees by 2020 – one for every person projected to be on earth.  As with TreeSisters, Earth Day Network’s goal is about more than just tree planting and reforestation.  Planting trees has the potential to restore degraded land, provide habitat for species, and combat climate change, all while benefiting local communities.  Trees for the Earth is focused tree planting, agroforestry, and supporting reforestation projects in developing countries in order to help them meet their international land restoration and climate commitments.  Earth Day Network’s Canopy Project also turns donations of $1 into 1 tree.  Through the combination of these two campaigns, Earth Day network has received commitments to plant over 1.5 billion trees since 2016.  Like the TreeSisters, EDN is focused on strengthening communities through tree planting, protecting the environment, and making the world a better place. Every commitment to plant a tree in support of the Trees for the Earth campaign helps us make progress toward our goal of 7.8 Billion trees by 2020. So thank you to TreeSisters for your great work and your pledge to plant over a million trees in support of Trees for the Earth. Note: If you are planning on planting any trees this Earth Day or anytime before Earth Day 2020 that you would like to commit to EDN’s Trees for the Earth campaign, please visit the reforestation section of our website and fill out our new form.
