Earth Day Network Welcomes New Carbon Pollution Standards for Power Plants
Statement of Earth Day Network

Earth Day Network welcomes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to implement carbon pollution standards for new fossil fuel fired power plants. Power plants are responsible for 40% of the carbon pollution emitted in the United States, directly contributing to declining air quality, a changing climate, extreme weather events, and public health crises.

Until this point, power plants have been allowed to emit carbon pollution freely, while America’s and the world’s children, families and communities have suffered the consequences. Today’s announcement—a key component of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan—represents a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. It also signals to the global community that President Obama will remain true to his commitment to fight climate change, and that the United States is willing to lead that fight.

On behalf of Earth Day Network and our thousands of partner organizations around the world, we applaud President Obama and the EPA for holding power plants accountable for their harmful carbon emissions. We look forward to the implementation of these standards, as well as the Administration’s continued commitment to environmental protection and the fight against climate change.
