Impressive Turnout to MillionTreesNYC’s 2010 Fall Planting Day, a Component of the Avatar Home Tree Initiative
On October 22 and 23, 2010, over 1,500 volunteers flocked to sites all over New York City, from Brooklyn, to Queens, to Staten Island, to plant 20,000 trees, coordinated by MillionTreesNYC. This event was supported by the Avatar Home Tree Initiative, a joint effort by Earth Day Network and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to plant one million trees around the world in 2010.
In attendance at the MillionTreesNYC tree planting activity and press conference in Van Cortlandt Park were Sylvia Vidal and Irene Farrow of Earth Day Network. Irene joined Liam Kavanagh, First Deputy Parks Commissioner; Amy Freitag, Executive Director of the New York Restoration Project; and over 230 volunteers to officially kick off the tree plantings. MillionTreesNYC is a public-private partnership between the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the New York Restoration Project, and the strength of this relationship and the support it receives from organizations across the city were evidenced by the success of the event.
Sylvia and Irene also joined in the tree planting activities in Van Cortlandt Park, each planting over 50 trees each. Earth Day Network thanks MillionTreesNYC for the opportunity to be present at this successful component of the Avatar Home Tree Initiative, and looks forward to continuing our reforestation initiatives in 2011.
